All About Ultrasounds

An ultrasound is a medical test that uses sound waves to produce pictures of your baby and organs in your body.  It allows the doctor find out whether your baby is developing normally.

You may have one or more ultrasounds at different times in your pregnancy.

Ultrasound images help your doctor to :

  • Estimate the date of delivery of your baby

  • Check the position of the placenta

  • Check the growing baby's size, position, heart and more

  • Identify multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)

Ultrasounds can also be used to screen for certain birth defects, like Down syndrome.
